Cole Dasilva scored a late penalty as Bishop’s Stortford salvaged a hard fought point away at Stourbridge on Saturday.  Glassboys captain Alexander Jones had given the hosts the lead in the first half, but the draw leaves the Blues 15th in the Pitching In Southern League Premier Central Division table, eight points clear of the relegation zone with seven games to go.

Nahum Melvin-Lambert had the first shot of the match, as Stortford broke quickly on the counter-attack, Presley Evans picked out the striker with a through ball but he pulled the effort wide of the bottom left corner. Jai Verma’s low effort from the left side of the box was smartly saved by Elliot Krasniqi before the Blues saw penalty appeals waved away when Jordaan Brown appeared to handle the ball while shepherding it back to goalkeeper Lewys Benjamin from Dasilva’s cross. The hosts turned the pressure up and produced two separate goalmouth scrambles, and may have been left dumbfounded as to how they didn’t take the lead earlier. A long throw from the left was flicked on at the near post, Stortford failed to clear and Jones bundled home four minutes before the break.

A left wing cross was cushioned into the path of Verma in space on the edge of the box, but he volleyed over the bar, before Luka Chalwell’s 25 yard volley looked to be dipping into the top left corner, and with the setting sun in Benjamin’s eyes, he took two attempts to gather the ball. Substitute Luke Warner-Eley delivered a dangerous cross and Joel Kettle flapped his hand at the ball when he missed his clearing header, and referee Jamie Conde didn’t hesitate in pointing to the spot. Benjamin dived to his right but couldn’t keep out Dasilva’s powerful strike into the bottom left corner. Tyrone Barnett went down in the box but was denied a penalty, as Stourbridge looked to restore their lead. After a number of throw-ins near the corner flag which were dealt with, Mark Haines headed the ball clear and Che Ranger let the ball go out for another throw, but before there was time to take, the referee blew for full time as the points were shared.
