Worcester City climbed out of the relegation zone as Bishop’s Stortford lost 2-0 at Sixways on Saturday, which saw the Blues drop out of the Play-Off places in the Pitching In Southern League Premier Central Division table. The Hertfordshire visitors failed to score in an away league game for the first time this season, with this match marking the club’s 50th away Southern League match.

After a slow start for both sides, Dan Sweeney spotted a gap in the Stortford defence and received a through ball in the right channel, and fired low across goal into the bottom left corner despite Adam Hayton getting a touch. Debutant Charlie Johnson misjudged a backpass to Hayton and the ball sailed over his head into the net to increase the lead for the hosts. The Blues suffered another injury blow with Aaron Greene making way for Luka Chalwell before the break, with the visitors toiling but without reward.

Hayton got down low to save Sweeney’s shot from the right side of the box, and Jake Thompson cleared on the rebound. Saleem Akanbi controlled the ball from Scott Kashket’s lofted pass, with his back to goal he turned and volleyed but it went over the bar. Liam Lockett picked up the ball near halfway when Stortford lost possession, he spotted Hayton off his line but he managed to backpedalling and palm the ball away from the goal. Cole Dasilva’s long range shot went over the bar before Kashket saw his low cross from the right cut out by a defender. Lockett saw his low shot from the edge of the box come off the base of the post but Sweeney was offside on the rebound. Kyle Belmonte found himself in the box but could only hit the crossbar from a right wing cross. A late flashpoint saw three yellow cards shown in second half injury time, with both teams perhaps fortunate not to see red.
