Tyrone Baker scored his first Bishop’s Stortford goal but the trip to Leiston on Tuesday night ended in a 3-1 defeat. The Blues are 18th in the early Pitching In Southern League Premier Central Division table with one point from two games.

Frank Norris had the first chance of the match when he received the ball and beat the defence with a smart turn, but the Stevenage’s loanee saw his shot deflected over the bar by a defender. A deep cross from the left was missed by Charlie Johnson at right back allowing Willie Clemons a chance to bring the ball down and shoot low at the near post from the left side of the box to give the Suffolk side the lead. Jake Thompson miscued an attempted volley from Jack Smith’s free kick into his standing leg, before Norris’ shot on the rebound was blocked. Joe Henman’s low shot from the edge of the box was saved by Max Woodford, before Sayer fired in from close range from a left wing cross to double the lead in first-half injury time.

Alfie Thornett could only get a glancing header on Smith’s free kick from the right, and Johnson fired wide from a tight angle. Substitute Jackson Chukwu-Nsofor glanced a header wide from Leon Davies’ left wing cross, before Fabio Virciglio’s through ball found Baker but he was fouled as he dribbled into the box. The new addition picked out the bottom left to halve the deficit for Stortford. Smith curled in a low free kick from the left into the six-yard box but no team-mate could find the finishing touch from close range, and after a spell of pressure around the Leiston box, Baker saw his shot blocked for a corner. Adam Mills restored a two goal lead for the hosts seven minutes from time with a close range finish from a left wing cross.
