Pitching In SouthernLeague Premier Central Division
Hamish Arnold
Jenson Sumnall scored in the sixth minute of injury time at the end of the match as Bishop’s Stortford tasted defeat for the first time this season, at home against Stourbridge in the Pitching In Southern League Premier Central Division. Including the abandoned match at Stratford Town, the Blues are still top of the league – without it Stortford sit fourth, two points behind Harborough Town. This match was originally due to take place as the Glassboys home ground, but pitch issues forced them to request a swap, with their home fixture now taking place later in the season.
Saleem Akanbi dribbled down the left wing but was forced too wide by a defender, and his shot from a tight angle was saved by Charlie Price. Blaine Rowe headed wide from a left wing cross for the visitors, before Luka Chalwell saw his curling effort from the left side of the box deflected behind for a corner on the right, Mark Haines won the header but couldn’t hit the target. Dom Lewis put his header over the bar for the Black Country outfit, before his team-mate Matthew Harland curled a shot wide of the top right corner from the edge of the box. Aaron Greene crossed from the left wing into the box for Akanbi with his back to goal, he tried a backheel to Chalwell but Price claimed the loose ball.
HT 0-0
Akanbi dribbled into the box from the halfway line but under pressure from four defenders he rushed the shot and fired wide. Hayton saved Brad Bood’s left footed free kick which looked destined for the bottom right corner, before a misplaced pass from Jack Smith was intercepted by substitute Fin Holmes, who dribbled through the middle into the box box but Stortford debutant Daniel Stokie shepherded the ball back to Hayton. Stourbridge turned up the pressure in second half injury time as Ty Barnett headed the ball back across goal from a right wing corner for Lewis but his header was saved. Jez Abbey received the ball with his back to goal, but he was denied on the turn when he shot by Hayton’s leg, and from the resulting corner he punched the ball clear. The throw-in from the left was taken short to Bood, who crossed in from the left, the Blues failed to deal with it and Sumnall ghosted in to poke the ball home at the near post.
