Pitching In Southern League Premier Central Division

Hamish Arnold

Adam Hayton and Bishop’s Stortford kept a first clean sheet in seven games and completed a league double over AFC Sudbury with a 0-2 away win on Saturday. Saleem Akanbi and Obi Onyeagwara scored as the Blues climbed to 11th in the Pitching In Southern League Premier Central Division, five points off the play-off positions with games in hand on four of the six teams directly above in the table, and 13 points above the relegation zone.

From a long ball, Akanbi flicked a header for Onyegawara, he squared the ball to debutant Victor Aiye but his low effort was saved from close range. Onyeagwara’s low cross from the right was blocked but received the ball back from the rebound, but the shot was saved from the right side of the box. Callum Page curled a low shot wide from outside the box, before Cole Dasilva’s cross from the right was headed goalwards by Akanbi, goalkeeper Lennon Maclorg misjudged his punch and was spared embarrassment by a team-mate who cleared off the line. Onyeagwara dribbled into the box from the right and cut the ball back to Charlie Castle who miscued his shot into Akanbi’s path who rolled home into the bottom left corner. Onyeagwara doubled the lead six minutes later when he latched onto Fabio Virciglio’s through ball in the left channel, he opened up his body and curled the ball right footed into the far side netting. From a through ball on the right wing, Kien Connolly forced Hayton into a double save at his near post, before Liam Pearce’s deflected effort was saved low by Hayton diving to his right. Aiye had another chance as he dribbled one on one with Maclorg from Castle’s through ball but shot over the bar.

HT 0-2

Page’s shot from long range came off the outside of the post and behind for a goal kick, before Harry Forde picked out Onyeagwara with a through ball down the line, he dribbled to the bye line for a cut back, where Akanbi dummied to Virciglio, his shot was saved and the rebound was put over the bar by Castle. Pearce skied a shot from the left side of the box before Finlay Corrigan’s long range strike was saved by a diving Hayton at full stretch. The hosts pushed to reduce the deficit late on, with Charlie Lewis seeming to have picked out the top corner with a header eight minutes from time, but Hayton plucked it out of the top corner with an acrobatic dive, before Fletcher following in for the rebound somehow put it wide.
