Bishop’s Stortford 1-0 St Ives Town Match Report 21/2/26

Pitching In Southern League Premier Central Division

Hamish Arnold

Both sides failed to convert penalty kicks as Bishop’s Stortford picked up a first win in seven games with a 1-0 victory over St Ives Town on Saturday. The Blues are 10 points clear of the relegation zone in 14th place in the Pitching In Southern League Premier Central Division table while the Cambridgeshire side are in a group of four teams within three points of the drop.

Tyrone Baker dragged a low shot wide of the bottom left corner from outside the box, two team mates tried to reach the ball to divert it goalwards but failed. Jernade Meade connected sweetly with a first-time volley shot but it went wide from 25 yards. Obi Onyeagwara dribbled on the wing and beat the full back before crossing to Frank Norris in the middle, he got his header on target but too close to goalkeeper Ollie Taylor who saved. Baker cut in off the left wing and aimed to pick out the near post with a powerful strike but Hayton got down well to his tight to deny the visitors. Brad Russell saw his curling effort from the edge of the box blocked for a corner, which was only half headed clear as Jack Smith hooked the ball back in, Jake Thompson struck in the volley but miscued wide. Norris went close again in the first half with a headed effort from Smith’s cross, but Taylor was equal to it once more. Fabio Virciglio picked out Norris with a through ball into the left channel, he worked some space for a low shot but couldn’t get his shot on target

HT 0-0

Stevenage loanee Norris was fouled by Duncan Idehen two minutes into the second half and referee Nathan Oakes pointed to the spot. Dasilva saw his penalty kick saved at a medium height by Taylor diving to his right, but he fired the rebound into the roof of the net to break the deadlock. Taylor saved Virciglio’s long range strike before there was a penalty at the other end as Russell was adjudged to have handled the ball in a goalmouth scramble, but Jonny Edwards fired over the bar from 12 yards. Alfie Shepherd’s long range strike was claimed by Hayton, substitute Charlie Castle saw his header from Dasilva’s cross saved at the other end, before former Blues midfielder Michael Richens’ long shot went over.
