Pitching In Southern League Premier Central Division
Hamish Arnold
At the halfway stage of the Pitching In Southern League Premier Central Division season, Bishop’s Stortford moved to within five points of the Play-Off positions with a 2-1 win over Bromsgrove Sporting on Saturday. After 21 games, the Blues are in 12th position with at least a game in hand on four of the five teams directly above in the table. Makise Evans scored his first Stortford goal and Revin Domi picked up an assist either side of the Rouslers’ equaliser from Luke Benbow.
Billy Shaw went close for the Worcestershire side, receiving the ball from a left wing cut back, he turned smartly and shot low for the bottom left corner but Adam Hayton kept it out and Mark Haines cleared. Brad Russell pulled a low effort wide from 25 yards, before Leon Davies picked out Cole Dasilva with a through ball into the left side of the box, he fizzed a low cross into the middle where Evans slid home from close range. Dasilva curled a free kick into the box from deep, Charlie Johnson nodded the ball down for Haines in the middle but his first time volley effort was acrobatically tipped over the bar by Rory Brown and from the resulting corner, Evans’ glancing header went narrowly wide of the goal. A long ball towards the Stortford box wasn’t dealt with by the defence, Benbow swivelled and shot with a half-volley, perfectly into the bottom left corner to equalise. But Saleem Akanbi restored the lead before the break, when Domi picked him out on the corner of the box from the left wing, and the forward curled the ball into the bottom right corner, in off the post.
HT 2-1
Shaw dribbled towards goal from halfway for Bromsgrove, under pressure from Jake Thompson, he narrowed the angle for the shot, forcing his effort wide of the bottom left corner. Visitors’ captain Tom Edge went close with a long range strike, Haines stuck out a leg to block but only got a deflection as it looped into Hayton’s arms. Edge went close again with a low shot from a tight angle but he was once again denied by Hayton, and the midfielder slipped as he lined up to shoot late on, dragging his effort wide in the process. Substitute Kobe Hall popped up at the far post with a stooping header from a left wing cross but couldn’t hit the target late on.
