Steve Castle named the same starting XI for the third consecutive match as Bishop’s Stortford suffered a 2-0 defeat at Bury Town on Saturday. The Blues remain 14th in the Pitching In Southern League Premier Central Division table with nine games to go, 10 points clear of the relegation zone before the visit of Harborough Town to Woodside Park on Tuesday, who could go top of the league with a win.

Cole Dasilva’s right wing cross was cushioned off Frank Norri’s chest to Brad Russell, but his volley went over the bar. Norris received Jack Smith’s through ball and made some space for a right footed shot from the edge of the box, but Charlie Beckwith saved the low shot. A goalmouth scramble from a left wing cross for the hosts saw the ball in the net but the assistant referee raised his flag for offside, before Callum Page’s chest and volley effort was well saved by Toby Atkins for a corner on the left. Oliver Canfer met the corner kick with a near post header to give the Suffolk outfit the lead just after the half-hour point. A defender blocked Page’s shot from the edge of the box for a corner which Stortford defended, but late on in the half, Page dribbled the length of the Blues’ half but dragged his low shot wide.

Dempsy Crace’s volley from the right side of the box after a free kick was tipped over the bar by Beckwith, before Erin Amu headed over the bar from Dasilva’s left wing corner. Atkins reacted quickly to make a close range save with his left leg to deny Jamie Mcgrath’s shot from a right wing cut back, before Ethan Mayhew doubled the lead with a goal from a similar position, picking out the bottom left corner with a first-time finish.
