Pitching In Southern League Premier Central Division
Hamish Arnold
Zak Goodson scored an 88th minute winner as Bishop’s Stortford were beaten by 10-player Quorn on Saturday. Player-manager Ryan Beswick had seen red not long before the decisive goal, but the Blues had chances earlier in the match but couldn’t take them. The result leaves Stortford in 14th place in the Pitching In Southern League Premier Central Division table, 13 points from the Play-Offs and 10 above the relegation zone.
Making his debut for the club, Stevenage loanee Frank Norris raced through on goal pouncing on a weak defensive header, with an attempted chip over Adam Harrison but he lifted it over the bar. Beswick’s left wing corner was won in the air by Jacob Fenton but his header went straight to Adam Hayton from the middle of the box before Cole Dasilva picked out Brad Russell with a right wing cut back but the midfielder’s shot went too high. Dasilva’s deep cross from the next attack went to the far post where Jack Smith made a late run but he put the header wide, and Obi Onyeagwara’s shot from the left side of the box was deflected off a defender and went straight to Harrison. Gus Canches outran Charlie Johnson on the right wing, he picked out Goodson in space but he fired straight at Hayton. Fenton fired wide from a promising counter-attack for the hosts, before Dasilva’s low shot from range was saved. Onyeagarwa played a one-two with Smith, with the winger’s low cross being blocked by Mason Frizelle for a corner, which Harrison punched clear. Russell fired wide from the right side of the box with a low shot across goal before a flying Johnson blocked a low shot and saw it deflected wide for a corner. Harrison came to claim a deep cross by Dasilva towards Russell, with questions asked of whether Steve Castle’s side should have been awarded a penalty when the goalkeeper wiped out the Stortford number 10, but no foul was awarded and the first half ended goalless.
HT 0-0
Norris peeled off to the back post for Leon Davies’ left wing cross but Harrison claimed the high ball, before a long range shot was deflected onto the cross bar and Goodson headed in the rebound but was flagged offside. Onyeagwara’s cut back to Norris allowed him a shooting chance but it was tipped round the post, the resulting corner was headed clear but only as far as Smith on the edge of the box, he headed the ball back and Johnson flicked it on to Russell but he volleyed over the bar. Norris’s low shot from Onyeagwara’s cut back went wide before Hayton denied Fenton as he dribbled through on goal, he pushed the ball wide but the forward had an open goal to aim at from the rebound but fired over the bar. Substitute Simeon Cobourne forced a low save from Hayton with a curling free kick, and Onyeagwara’s near post shot went wide. Jake Thompson slipped to allow Fenton to run through on goal but Johnson spared his captain’s blushes to recover and make a perfect tackle to deny a shooting chance, Norris’ glancing header at the other end went straight to Harrison from Davies’ cross. Beswick was adjudged to have made a high and reckless tackle on Russell and was sent off with less than 10 minutes to go, but he was reluctant to leave the pitch while continuing to give instructions to his players despite protests from the away dugout. Johnson’s attempted clearance was blocked by Goodson, who ran down the wing and fired low across goal from a tight angle. Thompson, playing as a makeshift striker headed wide from a left wing cross, as the hosts successfully held onto the lead in injury time.
